Impact Of Diabetes On Your Marriage

Both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia have an impact on the energy levels and moods of the person. Fluctuating blood sugar levels can cause a person to be cranky and irritable and in certain cases abusive and violent. If not checked these behavior patterns continue to persist, causing a strain in the couple's relationship.

Long term diabetics can suffer from some amount of damage to the nervous system which has direct connection with male erection. Hence with diabetes men may suffer from erectile dysfunction. According to Dr. P. Satya murthi, "a number of men actually discover that they are diabetic when they come to the doctor seeking treatment of erectile dysfunction."

In the case of women, those who suffer from diabetes have low arousal. They also tend to have recurring vaginal inflammation. Most people suffering from hyperglycemia need to urinate frequently during the night. This disturbs the sleep pattern and contributes to irritability. Besides, this constant movement in the room while one is asleep can cause disturbance to your partners sleep as well.

Most people suffering from type 2 diabetes suffer from sleep apnea This causes a person to snore. This again can become a bone of contention between the partners.

Fluctuation of blood sugar levels during moments of intimacy may cause undue emotional strain and stress. Sometimes due to lack of energy levels induced by diabetes, people feel very lethargic. This "clinical condition" is often misinterpreted as lack of love and appreciation by one's partner. As Prabhu says, "My wife says she feels abandoned when I feel lethargic due to a fall in sugar level. (this was before we knew what was causing it) And it became an issue that almost drove our relationship to the brink of separation."

Though one needs to be a little careful, it is not impossible for a diabetic to lead a perfectly happy and blissful married life. Just follow some of these simple rules-

-Include a moderate amount of exercise in your everyday schedule.

-Keep a check on the  kind of food you eat ( a little bit of sugar and sweets is o.k  but largely avoid sweet and oily food)

-Consult your doctor regularly
